Joy folds a shared album into its free wedding website, WedUploader sends every upload straight to your own Google Drive with no expiry, and WedShoots is a free app from the WeddingWire family. Any of them will end the wedding with more photos than you would have had otherwise, and this page is not going to pretend otherwise.
What the free options have in common is that they stop at the photo. No games, no DJ screen, no program, and a guestbook that is text at best. They also differ in one thing that matters more than price: whether your guests have to install something. Here is the comparison, and a note on The Knot, whose photo app is gone.

- Your budget for this is zero. All three deliver photos for nothing, and WedUploader’s free tier has no expiry because the files are yours from the start.
- You are already on Joy for the website, RSVP and registry, and you want guests in one place.
- You want the photos in your own Google Drive rather than on anyone’s server.
- You want audio voicemails from guests: WedUploader Premium has them for $39.
Where Partake is the better pick
- You want guests doing something together: Photo Challenges, trivia with a reveal, a story game read aloud.
- You have a DJ and want a screen that runs the games from the booth.
- You want a video guestbook with your own questions, and the day-of program on every phone.

What happened to The Knot’s photo app
The Knot used to have one. In October 2018 it made The Guest, formerly Veri, free for every couple, and it required an app download. As of the date on this page, both its App Store and Google Play listings are gone, The Knot’s help center has no article about guest photo uploads, and The Knot’s own June 2025 guide to QR-code photo sharing recommends five third-party tools instead of anything of its own.
So if you are searching for The Knot’s photo sharing, the honest answer is that there is nothing to compare. Keep your Knot website for the RSVP and the registry, and add a guest layer to it. Partake is one; the free options above are others.
A note on Joy and the app question
Joy’s wedding-website page says guests will need the app to upload photos. Its app page says guests do not need to download it unless you plan to text them through it. Its help articles describe uploading from an album link or a QR code without an account. Whichever is current on your wedding day, plan for the possibility that some guests hit an install prompt, because that is the moment most of them stop.
