How to play it at a table

1. 1

   One person holds the phone and asks for each blank by its label only: a place in your town, a household object, a silly exclamation.

2. 2

   Everyone else shouts answers. The holder types the best one. Nobody sees the story until the last blank is in.

3. 3

   Read the reveal out loud, slowly. The pause before each filled word is where the laugh lives.

4. 4

   Play it again with the same story and new words, or hand the phone to the next table.

Where it works best

The bridal shower, first. A story game is the one shower activity that does not require the guest of honor to open a gift while twelve people watch, and it gives a table of people who have only just met a reason to talk. At the reception it fills the gap between the meal and the first dance, when the room is seated, fed, and waiting for something to happen. It also travels: the rehearsal dinner, the bachelorette, the long car ride to the venue.

What it needs is a reader who commits. The words are only half the joke; the other half is someone reading “they talked for [a number] hours straight, mostly about [an animal in plural form]” with a completely straight face.
